Cab ride

A True Story by Kent Nerburn

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. It was a cowboy’s life, a life for someone who wanted no boss. What I didn’t realize was that it was also a ministry.
Because I drove the night shift, my cab became a confessional. Passengers climbed in, sat behind me in total anonymity, and told me about their lives. I encountered people whose lives amazed me, ennobled me, made me laugh and weep.
But none touched me more than a woman I picked up late one August night. I was responding to a call from a small brick four-plex in a quiet part of town.
I assumed I was being sent to pick up some partiers, or someone who had just had a fight with a lover, or a worker heading to an early shift at some factory for the industrial part of town. When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice, wait a minute, and then drive away. But I had seen too many impoverished people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute”, answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened.
A small woman in her 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knick-knacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.
“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, and then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing”, I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way would want my mother treated”.
“Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said.
When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.
“Oh, I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice.”
I looked in the rearview mirror. Her eyes were glistening. “I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. “What route would you like me to take?” I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.
Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her.
I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.
“How much do I owe you?” she asked, reaching into her purse.
“Nothing,” I said.
“You have to make a living,” she answered.
“There are other passengers,” I responded.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said, “Thank you.”
I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.
I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift?
What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?
On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life. We’re conditioned to think that lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware – beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

Weekend assignment

This is an assignment I gave to my students in class for the weekend. Someone should try to solve it and give me the answer.

It took 5 boys 8 days to plant 1200 trees on the school farm.
a) how long will it take 20 boy to plant the same number of trees.
b)how many day will it take the same number of boys to plant 4800 trees

FIVE FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN DEVELOPING YOUR UNIQUE GENIUS

Most often we see people excelling at their academics and conclude that they are geniuses. There are many first class graduates that are last class in life. More still are second class upper graduates but living in the lower class of society. We all have an equal opportunity to be as unequal as we want to be. Genius is attainable by any one at any time in their life. There are so many who were ones considered dummies, who by their choice to excel became better at solving problems and thus discovered five powerful ways to express their hidden genius.
A genius is an exceptionally intelligent person or one with exceptional skill in a particular area of activity. Are genius born or made has been a question many have asked for a long time. I will not claim to have the answer to that question but what I know is this; so many have moved from the class of dummies into the class of genius and so can you. Dr Ben Carson is a notable example. Let us consider the five factors
  • Know yourself and why your here: Genius involves figuring out who you are, and owning yourself. Its about amplifying your best traits and compensating for the rest. There are billions of people in the world today, a few are succeeding exceptionally while a vast majority are failing miserably. What is the difference between success and failure? Is it based on parental background, community, government or church? In as much as all these factors influence people's level of success, many have succeeded despite disadvantaged backgrounds. There is a reason you are here. You are not here to do every thing, you are here on a specific assignment. You were created on purpose for a purpose. "We all have a part to play in life and all you can do is play it", Basam in the movie Tyrant". It is your responsibility to discover it. You can not display genius outside your purpose. I feel most alive when I teach because that is my purpose. Let me ask you a question? If money was not a factor what will you love to be doing right now. When you locate it, the world will locate you
  • Discover your hidden abilities: Abilities are given to fulfill purpose. Birds fly, fishes swim. Water has the ability to quench the need for liquid in the body acid doesn't. I love teaching and the ability to compose and transmit information (communicate) comes naturally. Its the easiest thing I do. I studied civil engineering at the university, how ever I have little or no interest in construction. The best I could have been as an engineer would be a local champion, but watch out where am going as a communicator. Can I tell you something? What you were taught in school will not make you great except it is tailored towards your purpose. You want to stand out? Stand on the abilities that come naturally to you.
  • Focus on your purpose: Greatness comes at a cost and that cost is focus. "this one thing I do" said Paul the Apostle, not 10 things. He that is every where is nowhere. The energy from the sun can cause a paper to burn when its rays are focused through a convex lens. Focus causes you to be on fire and when you are on fire people will love to come and see you burn. You have to focus on your assignment to make impact in life. Be focused and you will drill your pure genus from the core of your being.
  • Persistence: If you want to be a genius you must persist and insist. Genius does not come overnight. No classic is created overnight. That is one difference between other Hoods and Hollywood. John Maxwell, one of my mentors as a communicator said that in one of his leadership classes a man walked up to him to appreciate him for the insight he had given them This gentle man went further to say that he wished he had heard the leadership genius 20 years earlier. To that statement John replied, "You wouldn't have wanted to hear me 20 years ago". What made the difference between who he was 20 year before and who he was at the time they talked? Persistence. Persistence converts the freedom to be a mediocre to an opportunity to enlist yourself among the high flyers. There is a reservoir of genius in you, persist until the world sees it.
  • Learn from the best: Successful people are those that are willing to learn from successful people who have gone on the journey of success before them. Isaac Newton a genius in every sense quipped, "If I could see any further than others, it was because I stood on the shoulders of giants". You can only learn the best from the best. Who are you learning from? One of the ways I learn from the best is through their books. I have never met John Maxwell but there are just few of his books I don't have and haven't read. You see the wisdom radiating from a man's mind can be reflected to your mind through the pages of his books. The number one book to read, however is the bible because it is the word of the best of the best, God himself.
Genius awaits you, take responsibility and become who you were created to be.

Thank God its a new day

Thank God its a new day

After a wonderful church service last night, I slept some minutes before midnight. This morning am up again to the glory of God. A new day has come for me, a day of new opportunities and challenges. I have to make this day count. Am older today than I was yesterday.
This morning I will be going to teach my students in school. I thank God for the privilege of being a teacher. Being a tool for impacting lives and destinies of people both directly and indirectly. Lets ask our selves this morning, how we can express our gratitude for the life we live. I believe we have to make some one say thank God today because he/she met up this day. Let us go out the and be the helping hands of God, His loving eyes and smile, His encouraging words and His faithfulness. Let God love someone through us today. This day is my best day yet.

LET ME GIVE

LET ME GIVE

~Author Unknown~

I do not know how long I'll live
But while I live, Lord, let me give
Some comfort to someone in need
By smile or nod, kind word or deed.

And let me do what 'ere I can
To ease things for my fellow man.
I want naught but to do my part
to lift a tired or weary heart.

To change folks' frowns to smiles again.
Then will I not have lived in vain.
And I'll not care how long I'll live
If I can give... and give... and give.

The world minus just one person is full of others. We are all on this journey called life, make some body's travel more exciting.

3 Reasons You Must Be Happy if You Want to Attract Success and How You Can Do it

3 Reasons You Must Be Happy if You Want to Attract Success and How You Can Do it

Have you ever thought of happiness as an asset? Even the best of accountant will most likely not include it as one. Your Happiness is the most valuable asset you have. With it success is sure but without it success is but an illusion. Yesterday, I went to repair my computer at a very busy spot in my city Portharcourt. I was there about an hour before the repairer came. While waiting for his arrival, I witnessed countless persons in a hurry towards where they earn something in order to be Just above broke. Some would have preferred that I called it a job. A few looked excited, others showed know emotion, while a vast majority looked as tough they had just been given a life sentence. I thought to my self, surely these persons will not perform at the same level. I thought to my self, if i had the opportunity to give a piece of advice to these fellows what would I have said? If I had the opportunity to have a one on one with them this is what I would have said;
Me: Hello, my name is Charles
Fellow: My name is "I love this post"
Me: I bet you want to be successful?
Fellow: Yes I certainly do
Me: If you want to be successful you must be HAPPY
Fellow: How does my happiness affect my success?
Me: These are the 3 reason you must be happy if you want to be successful
  • People are attracted to happy people: No one not even a little baby want to look straight into an unhappy face. No one succeeds without other people. One is too small a number to achieve greatness. The more you have the right people around you who have been attracted by the happiness radiating from you, the faster you attract success. John Wesley said, "when you set your self on fire, people will love to come and see you burn". Don't try this at home. But when you are burning with the fire of happiness people will love to come and see you burn.
  • Happiness fosters good health: The writer of proverbs who said that "a merry heart does good like medicine". Lack of happiness has resulted in some chronic disease like cancer, diabetic and high blood pressure. When any person is buoyant in his health surely his drive for success will be limited.
  • You readily help others: Unhappy people are too focused on themselves to see and attend to the need of others. Solving need of others increases your value and influence in their lives and will ultimately qualify you for the opportunities for success.
Fellow: How do i experience Happiness?
Me: Do the following
  • Make the choice to be happy: You, not events, have the power to make yourself happy or unhappy. If you want to be happy, be.
  • Make some one else happy: You don't get happiness by going in search of it, you get it by giving out to others. Those that sow happiness in tears shall reap in happiness in joy.
  • Make you dwelling among the happy: Happiness is air borne, a happy environment is contagious. Being a kids teacher in church had made to understand this for a fact. Children are ever happy. Its impossible to be surrounded by children and be depressed.

Me: HAVE A HAPPY LIFE AHEAD

Your Mind; the lid on your success

You are limited by your mind

Life gives us lessons that can transform our perspective if only we could show up for the class and pay attention. This story am about to tell you made me angry, got me lost in thought and then fascinated by the power and limitation the mind can place on a man's life.
Some months ago I was out in town going to church for a children's ministry meeting. On my way I got a taxi from garrison to presidential. For those who are familiar with the city of portharcourt. For those not familiar with our way of commuting, when you get a taxi you always have company. Other passengers that have to takes the ride just like in a bus. Just after I got in, a young man and his daughter got into the back seat. As they were about entering, the little girl injured herself. The cry that followed could not be stopped by her dad or any one in the taxi for that matter. I knew she wasn't crying because of the pain, it was a minor scratch. She had seen an opportunity to profit. As a loving dad, and a man who was getting embarrassed, he began to ask her what she wanted. Seating at the front seat looking unconcerned, I knew she had hit the target. What could she possibly ask for I wondered. She could ask for any thing with the grasp of her father and her ability to handle.  I waited patiently as this girl, not more than 5 years old, put her mind to work. And suddenly the wait was over, she was about to make her request. With all excitement she told her dad, "daddy I want lollipop". Lolli what? I shouted. In my mind of-course.  She could have asked for shoes, cloths, go see a movie, something else, any thing else, not lollipop. Being angrily lost in though, I past where I was going. I had to walk back. Why couldn't she have asked for something better?
The answer is this, she was limited by her mental ability. He mind set a lid on what she could ask for. What she got was not limited by her father's ability but by her ability to think. I believe that same girl 20 years from now will not make the same request.
But are we any different from this little girl. God said ask and it shall be given. The answer does not come based on your ability but by His ability. We limit ourselves continually while God said he is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think. He can do much more than you expect of Him. Why settle for local championship when the world has your name on it. As far as you can see God will give to you. Keep moving forward and higher. Don't settle for less than the best. Expand your mental capacity else you will be a captive to mediocrity. Take charge or you will be charged and sentenced to a life of sorrow, regret and desolation. You can't be some one else but you can be the best you were created to be. Ask and it shall be given. What you have at the moment is what you have asked of life. Increase you mental capacity, if you want more you simply have to become more. Make the rest of your life the best of your life.

CAN WE SECURE OUR TOMORROW

It is a big privilege to be alive at such a time as these. Technological advancement has made life so comfortable. We move faster from place to place, we can have a conversation with some one on the other side of the world without the person in the next room in the same house hearing our discuss. Life has become more enjoyable than ever before. I Don't think I would have loved to be born at the time my parents were. In one generation life has changed unprecedentedly. But as I was getting my self prepared for work this morning I began to ask myself if am making the best use of the opportunities that I have been gifted with. I also ask you this morning, are you maximizing life's opportunities. As a teacher the best gift I know I have are the kids I teach both in church and at school.
How ever it is a shame to see many parents misuse and disuse these precious gifts God has given them. When they think of their investments they most times never consider their children on that list. Are you securing your future. You have a responsibility to train you children. You can train your children any way you want but you can only train them once. What values are you impacting in them? In the book "things fall apart", the author asked "where are the young banana trees that will stand when the old banana tree  is no longer there?" Its not the teacher's young banana tree, its yours. You must take up the responsibility to train them up. Even the best teacher can not take your place in the life of your children. The amount of money you spend on school fees makes no difference. What shall it profit you if you gain a fat bank account and loose you own child. Its not what you leave for your kids but what you leave in them that matters. Most parents are always using their job as an excuse for having no time to personally mold the lives of their children. Watch it, no body on their death bed ever wished to spend one more day at work if they could secure one more. You don't want to end up having thieves, prostitutes, drunks and so on surrounding you in your final hours. Make a decision to invest quantity and quality time with your bananas while you can. Meanwhile, I have to go and take care of a few bananas in my farm. Have a productive day at work and a wonderful time with your bananas later own. Adios mis amigos.

GOD CREATED THE TEACHER

GOD CREATED THE TEACHER

On the 6th day, God created men and women. On the 7th day, he rested. Not so much to recuperate, but rather to prepare himself for the work he was going to do on the next day. For it was on that day - the 8th day - that God created the FIRST TEACHER.
This TEACHER, though taken from among men and women, had several significant modifications. In general, God made the TEACHER more durable than other men and women. The TEACHER was made to arise at a very early hour and to go to bed no earlier than 11 PM, with no rest in between.
The TEACHER had to be able to withstand being locked up in an air-tight classroom for six hours with thirty-five "monsters" on a rainy Monday. And the TEACHER had to be fit to correct 103 papers over Easter vacation. Yes, God made the TEACHER tough...but gentle, too. The TEACHER was equipped with soft hands to wipe away the tears of the neglected and lonely student... those of the sixteen-year old girl who was not asked to the prom.
And into the TEACHER God poured a generous amount of patience. Patience when a student asks to repeat the directions the TEACHER has just repeated for someone else. Patience when the kids forget their lunch money for the fourth day in a row. Patience when one-third of the class fails the test. Patience when the text books haven't arrived yet, and the semester starts tomorrow.
And God gave the TEACHER a heart slightly bigger than the average human heart. For the Teacher's heart had to be big enough to love the kid who screams, "I hate this class - it's boring!" and to love the kid who runs out of the classroom at the end of the period without so much as a "goodbye," let alone a "thank you."
And lastly, God gave the TEACHER an abundant supply of HOPE. For God knew that the TEACHER would always be hoping. Hoping that the kids would someday learn how to spell... hoping not to have lunchroom duty... hoping that Friday would come... hoping for a free day... hoping for deliverance.
When God finished creating the TEACHER, he stepped back and admired the work of His hands. And God saw that the TEACHER was good. Very Good! And God smiled, for when he looked at the TEACHER, he saw into the future.
He knew that the future is in the hands of the TEACHERS. And because God loves TEACHERS so much... on the 9th day God created... Public Holidays. Guess what He is still creating more public holidays millions of days later.

5 ENEMIES OF THE NIGERIAN YOUTH

5 ENEMIES OF THE NIGERIAN YOUTH

5 ENEMIES OF THE NIGERIAN YOUTH

wake up
I just stumbled on a short story that depicts the plight of the Nigerian youth. Take a read;

A man went to a fortune teller to hear what she had to say about his future. She looked into a crystal ball and said, "You will be poor and unhappy until you are forty-five years old"
"Then what will happen", asked the man hopefully
"Then you will get used to it", she said.
 The Nigerian youth has found him/her self relegated to the back in the community of youths in the world. This is not because we don't have the talent or the energy to compete with youths form across the globe but we have allowed ourselves to get used to some things. It bothers me when a young man, not physically or mentally disable, goes month to month without money in his pocket and he is not concerned. Its annoys me when I see young ladies in their twenties and thirties who should be dressing responsibly, packaging themselves to be respected and desired by a responsible man still dressing as though they are going to a high school prom or night club. It pains me when a young man in his late thirties and forties still call himself o-boy and actually behaving like a boy. We live in the twenty first century when you have access to nearly the same amount of information as a young person any where in the world has. I believe that any youth that fails in this time and age should be flogged by his/her ancestors. They would have given any thing to live in such a time as these. We are failing because we have become comfortable. We have become so used to the following;

  • Ourselves: We have being living in the same body all our lives so we have become used to it. We some times loose touch of the fact that we are getting old every second. I constantly put in the effort to remind myself how old I am. Can I ask you a question? If your little you sees who he/she has become will he/she be proud. When you were little did you admire people that are like who you are right now? Don't waste that child's life. That child that trekked to school, had nothing to eat, read all night to pass his exams. Be conscious of your mortality. You can live your life any way you want to but you can only live it once.
  •  Parents: Parents are very useful during childhood but they might be a stumbling block to your success if you remain comfortable being that little child that they cared for. Many Nigerian youths are failing right now because they don't want to declare independence from their parents. They don't think they can survive without them. Listen you will fail if you remain a daddy or mommy's boy. Most of our parents left their villages and their parents behind in search of opportunities in big towns and cities. Today they want to shield us from the challenges that made great women and men out of them. Can I tell you the truth most of your parents don't trust you. Tell the average Nigerian parent that you need 5 million naira to undertake a masters degree program and they will give you. But after that program tell that same parent that you need 1 million to start up a business, and they will say I don't have. Its time for the Caterpillar to become a butterfly. Its time to come out of your cocoons. The world awaits your beauty.
  • Being called Leaders of tomorrow: From primary school the Nigerian youth had been hypnotized to think that he is the leader of tomorrow. You can never lead tomorrow because you can never live in a day called tomorrow. This is why men that have ruled this nation twenty, thirty years ago keep recycling themselves. Listen you are a leader today. Youths out there all over the world are making impact, leading different spheres of human life while we sit and wait for   tomorrow. Friends we must lead today. You are not too young to be successful. Make a mark.
  • Blaming the Government: In almost every news paper stand you will see people talking about politics, politicians and how the government is not helping them. The government can not solve your problem, they can only subsidize it. You have to take up responsibility. No body owes you any thing not even the government. success is not something you are given you have to go out there and get it. If you will change every thing will change for you. Taxes by the government are heavy, but there are more taxes that are more grievous to us; we are taxed twice as much by our laziness, three times as much by our pride and four times as much from our foolishness. For these taxes no government is responsible.
  • Friends: A wise man said that you will remain the same way you are today five years from now but for the books you read and the people you meet. Many folks have become comfortable with their friends, You have to give up some friends to go up in life because you become the combined average of the five people you hang out with. The companion of fools gets destroyed. There are two kinds of people in the world; those who lift and those who lean. Don't get used to a leaner except you are posing for a photograph.
The Nigerian youth is capable of holding his own. I believe true change will start with the new generation of empowered youths. Share this post with your friends, as we take over our world.

FOUR QUICK QUESTIONS THAT WILL ACCELERATE YOU TO SUCCESS

FOUR QUICK QUESTIONS THAT WILL ACCELERATE YOU TO SUCCESS

The difference between people is in the questions they ask. Right questions are the best place of miraculous destinies. People fail not because they don't know any thing but because they don't know enough. If a man knows better, he will do better but knowledge is a product of questions asked. These four questions will undoubtedly change your life
  • Why: many are living their lives on auto pilot. when the purpose of a thing is not know, a wise man said, abuse is inevitable. Why do you want to be successful. What will your life be like when you eventually succeed? How will it impact on your family, community, country and the world over? The depth of your why will determine the height and stability of your success. Becoming successful requires sacrifice. Many don't pay the sacrifice because they are not seeing the big picture. That big picture is your why. It was said of Jesus Christ that for the joy that was set before him, he endured the cross. He had a big enough why, do you? If you don't begin to make the list.
  • Why not: When some people are given an opportunity to be successful, they make excuses. You don't need more than one excuse to exit the road to success. But i want to ask you, why not see how much you can make. Why not see how many people you can help. This question kills excuses that excludes many from the exciting journey to success.
  • Why not you: If any body has ever been successful why not you. If a woman is the president of Germany why not you. If someone out there is impacting on their world why not you. If someone has bounced back from failure to be successful, why not you. What ever some one had done in any field is no longer impossible. That means you can do it too. Stop watching other people make things happen and begin to make impact. YOU CAN! Take up responsibility for your destiny. If you will ever be successful its up to YOU
  • Why not now: What are you waiting? What ever is worth doing is worth doing badly until you do it well. Don't wait for the right time. Now is the acceptable time. There will never be a perfect time to do a great thing. Every thing we can we started by failing at it. No more procrastination. Get to work on your dreams. There is a world out there that has your name on it. How long will you keep it waiting?
Am a teacher and I love it
